San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. has been suspended for 80 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Prevention and Treatment Program, the league announced Friday. He tested
In a statement, the shortstop said he inadvertently ingested Clostebol in a medication he took to treat ringworm. “I should have used the resources available to me in order to ensure that no banned substances were in what I took. I failed to do so,” he said.
“I am completely devastated. There is nowhere else in the world I would rather be than on a field competing with my teammates,” he added. Tatis said he initially appealed the suspension but has since “realized that (his) mistake was the cause of this result” and will now begin serving the suspension immediately.
Tatis was on the verge of making his 2022 season debut after suffering a fractured wrist in the offseason and undergoing surgery in March. He began his rehab assignment with the Padres’ Double-A squad in San Antonio last weekend.
“We were surprised and extremely disappointed to learn today that Fernando Tatis Jr. tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Prevention and Treatment Program and subsequently received an 80-game suspension without pay,” San Diego said in a statement. “We fully support the Program and are hopeful that Fernando will learn from this experience.”
Tatis suspension is third for PEDs in MLB this season. Other players recently suspended for Clostebol include Dee Strange-Gordon in 2016 and Freddy Galvis in 2012.
The suspension comes 10 days after San Diego’s blockbuster deal to acquire Juan Soto, which would have eventually set the team up with a formidable Big Three of Tatis, Soto and Manny Machado.
