Allan Saint-Maximin will miss Newcastle’s trip to Liverpool and could be sidelined for at least another 10 days with a hamstring strain.

Sportsmail understands the winger is also extremely doubtful for Saturday’s visit of Crystal Palace. The game at West Ham a week on Sunday is a more likely return date.

Saint-Maximin picked up the problem during the closing stages of Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Wolves, a point salvaged by his stunning strike in the 90th minute.

Head coach Eddie Howe said on Tuesday that the 25-year-old was a ‘worry’ for the Anfield clash but added that his side’s injury problems should only be ‘short term’. Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes are also nursing hamstring complaints.

In better news for Howe, £60million record signing Alexander Isak has been cleared to play at Liverpool after he was granted a work permit by the Home Office.

Newcastle had been prepared to wait until 75 minutes before kick-off for the paperwork to arrive but they received clearance on Wednesday afternoon.

And Howe could well be tempted to start with the 22-year-old forward given the loss of those key personnel in attacking areas.
